The Story of Amrita Devi
Amrita Devi was a brave woman from the Bishnoi community in Rajasthan. Long ago, the king's men came to cut down the Khejri trees in her village. Amrita Devi hugged the trees to protect them. She said she would give her life to save the trees. Many other Bishnoi villagers also protected the trees by hugging them. This brave act inspired the Chipko Movement later.
Why Trees are Important
Trees give us many things: fresh air to breathe, shade from the sun, fruits to eat, and wood for building. Tree roots hold the soil together and stop it from being washed away by rain. Trees bring rain by releasing moisture into the air. They are home to many birds, insects, and animals. Without trees, life on Earth would be very difficult.
The Chipko Movement
Inspired by Amrita Devi's sacrifice, the Chipko Movement started in the 1970s in Uttarakhand. Villagers, especially women, hugged trees to stop them from being cut down by contractors. "Chipko" means "to hug" or "to cling". This movement taught everyone that forests belong to the people and must be protected for future generations.
How We Can Help
We can help protect trees in many ways. Plant new trees on special days like World Environment Day and Van Mahotsav. Water young plants regularly. Do not break branches or carve on tree trunks. Use paper wisely and recycle it. Spread awareness about the importance of trees. Even one tree can make a big difference!
