Our Amazing Ears
Ears help us hear sounds. We have two ears, one on each side of our head. Having two ears helps us figure out which direction a sound is coming from. The outer part of the ear collects sound and sends it inside through the ear canal. Inside, there is a thin skin called the eardrum that vibrates when sound reaches it. This is how we hear.
Types of Sounds
We hear many different sounds every day. Some sounds are pleasant, like music and birdsong. Some sounds are loud and unpleasant, like the noise of traffic or construction, which we call noise. Sounds can be loud or soft, high or low. A whistle makes a high sound, while thunder makes a low, deep sound. Very loud sounds can hurt our ears.
Animals and Hearing
Many animals can hear sounds that humans cannot. Dogs can hear very high sounds, which is why dog whistles work even though we cannot hear them. Bats use sound to find their way in the dark. They make sounds that bounce off objects and come back to their ears, like an echo. Elephants can hear very low sounds from far away. Rabbits have big ears that help them hear predators coming.
Taking Care of Our Ears
We should protect our ears from very loud sounds. Do not listen to music at a very high volume through headphones. Cover your ears near loud machinery or firecrackers. Never put sharp objects inside your ears. If water gets into your ear while swimming, tilt your head to let it flow out. Visit a doctor if you have ear pain or difficulty hearing.
