Key Concepts

The World of Honeybees

Honeybees are amazing insects that live together in large groups called colonies. A colony lives in a beehive, which is made of wax. There are three types of bees: the queen bee (who lays eggs), worker bees (who collect nectar and make honey), and drone bees (who mate with the queen). A single hive can have thousands of bees working together!

How Bees Make Honey

Worker bees fly from flower to flower, collecting nectar, which is a sweet liquid inside flowers. They store the nectar in their honey stomach. Back in the hive, they pass the nectar to other bees who chew it and store it in honeycomb cells. The bees fan the nectar with their wings to dry it out. When it is thick enough, it becomes honey! The bees seal the cells with wax.

Bees Help Flowers

When bees visit flowers to collect nectar, pollen sticks to their body. When they fly to the next flower, some pollen falls off. This is called pollination, and it helps flowers make seeds and fruits. Without bees, many plants would not produce fruits! Bees are very important for growing food crops like mangoes, apples, and sunflowers.

Beekeeping

Some people keep bees in special wooden boxes to collect honey. This is called beekeeping or apiculture. The beekeeper wears a special suit and gloves to protect from stings. Beekeeping provides honey, beeswax, and helps farmers because bees pollinate their crops. Honey is delicious and also used as a medicine for coughs and wounds.
