Why Do We Cook Food?

Cooking makes food soft, tasty, and easy to eat. Raw food like rice and dal is very hard, but after cooking, it becomes soft. Cooking also kills germs in food, making it safe to eat. Some foods like salad and fruits can be eaten raw, but many foods must be cooked before eating. Cooked food is easier for our body to use.

Different Ways of Cooking

There are many ways to cook food. Boiling means cooking in hot water, like boiling rice or eggs. Frying means cooking in hot oil, like making pakoras. Roasting means cooking over fire, like roasting corn or papad. Baking means cooking in an oven, like making bread or cake. Steaming means cooking with steam, like making idli or momos.

Fuels for Cooking

We need heat to cook food, and heat comes from fuels. In cities, people use LPG gas from cylinders. In villages, some people use wood, cow dung cakes, or coal. Some people use kerosene stoves. Electric stoves and induction cookers use electricity. Solar cookers use sunlight to cook food. Using clean fuels like LPG and electricity is better for our health because they do not make smoke.

Kitchen Safety

The kitchen can be dangerous because of fire and hot things. Never go near the stove without an adult. Do not touch hot pots and pans. Keep sharp knives away from the edge of the table. If oil catches fire, never pour water on it. Always tell an adult if something spills or breaks in the kitchen. Safety comes first!
