Key Concepts

Where Does Rain Come From?

The sun heats water from rivers, lakes, and oceans. This water turns into water vapour (tiny invisible drops) and goes up into the sky. High up in the sky, it becomes cold and the water vapour forms clouds. When the clouds get heavy with water, the water falls down as rain. This is called the water cycle, and it happens again and again!

Types of Weather

Weather is how the sky and air feel on any day. On sunny days, the sky is clear and bright. On cloudy days, clouds cover the sun. On rainy days, water falls from clouds. On windy days, the air moves fast. In winter, it gets cold, and in summer, it gets hot. Weather keeps changing, and we wear different clothes for different weather.

Rainy Season

In India, the rainy season is called monsoon. It usually comes in June or July. During the rainy season, we carry umbrellas and wear raincoats. Roads can get muddy and slippery. We see frogs jumping happily in the rain. Farmers are very happy because their crops need rain to grow. Children love to play in puddles!

Why Rain is Important

Rain gives us water for drinking, cooking, and bathing. Rain helps plants and crops grow. Rain fills up rivers, lakes, and ponds. Without rain, there would be no water and living things would not survive. But too much rain can cause floods, which can be dangerous. So we need just the right amount of rain.
