- Recognise shapes like cylinder, sphere, cone, and cuboid
- Sort objects by their shapes
- Describe objects using shape words
Key Concepts
Round Objects
Many things around us are round. A ball is perfectly round on all sides — this shape is called a sphere. A lemon and an orange are also round like a sphere. The earth we live on is round too. Round objects can roll easily on the ground.
Long and Round Objects
Some objects are long and round at the same time. A log of wood, a candle, and a pipe are long and round. This shape is called a cylinder. A cylinder has two flat circles at each end and a curved surface around it. A tin can and a glass are also shaped like cylinders.
Flat Objects
Some objects are flat. A book, a box, and a brick are flat with sharp edges. These shapes are called cuboids. A cuboid has flat faces, straight edges, and corners. A dice is a special cuboid where all sides are equal — it is called a cube.
Pointed Objects
Some objects have a point on top. An ice cream cone, a birthday cap, and a funnel are pointed at one end. This shape is called a cone. A cone has a flat circle at the bottom and comes to a point at the top.
Shapes that Roll and Shapes that Slide
Round shapes like spheres and cylinders can roll. Flat shapes like cubes and cuboids cannot roll — they slide. A cone can roll in a curved path. This is why wheels are round — they roll smoothly.
Important Terms
- Sphere: A perfectly round shape like a ball
- Cylinder: A long round shape like a tin can
- Cone: A shape with a flat circle at one end and a point at the other
- Cuboid: A box-like shape with flat faces and sharp corners
- Cube: A special cuboid where all faces are equal squares
- Roll: To move by turning over and over
- Slide: To move smoothly along a surface without turning
Quick Revision
- Ball = sphere (round), Can = cylinder (long and round), Box = cuboid (flat)
- A sphere can roll in any direction
- A cylinder can roll in a straight line
- A cuboid can only slide, not roll
- A cone has a pointed top and a round bottom
- Look around your home and sort objects into these shape groups
