Learning Objectives

  • Identify straight lines and curved lines
  • Draw straight lines using a ruler
  • Recognise lines in shapes and everyday objects
  • Understand standing lines, sleeping lines, and slanting lines
  • Create pictures and designs using different types of lines

Key Concepts

Straight Lines

A straight line goes in one direction without bending. We can draw a straight line using a ruler. The edge of a book, the side of a door, and a taut rope are examples of straight lines. Straight lines can be long or short.

Curved Lines

A curved line bends and is not straight. The letter C is a curved line. The edge of a plate is curved. A rainbow is a curved line in the sky. Curved lines can bend gently or sharply.

Types of Straight Lines

Straight lines can go in different directions. A standing line goes up and down, like a pole or a tree trunk. A sleeping line goes from left to right, like the horizon. A slanting line goes at an angle, like a slide in a playground. We use all these lines when we write letters and draw pictures.

Lines in Shapes

Shapes are made of lines. A triangle has 3 straight lines. A square has 4 straight lines. A rectangle has 4 straight lines. A circle is made of one curved line. We can make many shapes by putting different lines together.

Lines in Our World

Lines are everywhere. Railway tracks are straight lines. The strings of a guitar are straight lines. A snake moves in a curved line. The edge of a coin is a curved line. Roads can be straight or curved. Looking for lines around us is a fun activity.

Drawing with Lines

We can draw pictures using lines. A house can be drawn using standing lines, sleeping lines, and slanting lines. A flower can be drawn using curved lines. Letters like L, T, and H use straight lines. Letters like S, C, and O use curved lines.

Important Terms

  • Straight line: A line that does not bend or curve
  • Curved line: A line that bends and is not straight

  • Sleeping line: A straight line that goes left to right (horizontal)
  • Slanting line: A straight line that goes at an angle (diagonal)
  • Ruler: A tool used to draw straight lines and measure length

Quick Revision
