Story Summary

Mr Gessler was a German shoemaker who made boots of the finest quality. He took great pride in his work and made each pair by hand with utmost care. He never advertised and relied only on the quality of his work. His boots were perfect - they fitted beautifully and lasted long.

Over time, big firms with machine-made boots took over the market. They advertised heavily and sold cheaper boots. Mr Gessler's business declined. He lost his shop, then worked in a smaller space. He refused to compromise on quality even as he grew poorer. Eventually, he died of starvation, still working on a pair of boots, maintaining his standards till the very end.
