About the Text

This is a biographical account of Albert Einstein, tracing his life from birth to his role as a global advocate for peace. It shows that genius does not always manifest in conventional ways from the very beginning.

Early Life and Unusual Beginnings

Albert Einstein was born on 14 March 1879 in Ulm, Germany. His mother thought he was a freak because his head was too large. He did not speak until he was two and a half years old. Even when he learned to speak, he repeated every sentence twice, earning him the nickname of a dull child. Other children found him boring and he was often left alone.

Despite these early signs, Einstein showed curiosity and a love for music. He learned to play the violin at age six, which became a lifelong passion. At school, he felt stifled by the rigid, mechanical teaching style. His headmaster told his father that Einstein would never amount to anything.

Education and Early Career

Einstein attended a school in Munich but was unhappy with the regimentation. He left school at 15 and moved to a more liberal school in Switzerland. He later studied at the University of Zurich. After graduating, he could not find a university position and took a job as a technical expert at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern in 1902.

He married his fellow student Mileva Maric in 1903. She was equally brilliant in mathematics and physics.

Scientific Achievements

In 1905 (his "miracle year"), Einstein published several groundbreaking papers:

  • The Special Theory of Relativity, which included the famous equation E = mc². This showed that mass and energy are interchangeable and that a small amount of mass can produce an enormous amount of energy.
  • His work on the photoelectric effect (for which he later won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921).

In 1915, he published the General Theory of Relativity, which provided a new interpretation of gravity. When a solar eclipse in 1919 confirmed his theory, Einstein became world-famous overnight.

He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.

Emigration and Later Life

When the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933, Einstein emigrated to the United States and settled at Princeton, New Jersey. He became an American citizen in 1940.

Einstein and World Peace

Einstein wrote a letter to US President Franklin D. Roosevelt warning that Germany might be developing an atomic bomb, and urging the US to begin its own nuclear research. This led to the Manhattan Project and the development of the atomic bomb.

When atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, Einstein was deeply shocked. He spent the rest of his life campaigning for peace and nuclear disarmament. He wrote to the United Nations advocating for a world government to prevent future wars. He passed away in 1955.

Title Significance

"A Truly Beautiful Mind" refers not just to Einstein's scientific genius, but also to his deep concern for humanity and his efforts to promote peace — making his mind truly beautiful in a moral sense as well.

Important Terms

  • Relativity: Einstein's theory relating space, time, mass, and energy
  • E = mc²: Energy equals mass times the speed of light squared
  • Patent Office: Government office that grants patents for inventions
  • Nuclear fission: Splitting of an atomic nucleus, releasing enormous energy
  • Regimentation: Strict discipline and order
  • Philistines: People who are hostile to culture and the arts

Quick Revision

  • Born: 14 March 1879 in Ulm, Germany; slow learner as a child
  • Loved violin from age 6; unhappy with rigid schooling
  • 1905: Special Theory of Relativity (E = mc²); 1915: General Theory
  • Nobel Prize in Physics: 1921 (for photoelectric effect)
  • Emigrated to USA in 1933; campaigned for peace after atomic bombings
  • Title: "beautiful mind" = genius + compassion for humanity
