- Develop confidence in using math every day
Key Concepts
Math in Shopping
When you go shopping, you use math all the time. You add up prices to find the total bill. You subtract to calculate change. You multiply when buying several items of the same price. If 3 notebooks cost Rs 45 each, the total is 3 x 45 = Rs 135. If you pay Rs 200, your change is 200 - 135 = Rs 65. Math helps you manage money wisely!
Math in Cooking
Cooking uses math too! Recipes tell you to use 2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of sugar, and 250 mL of milk. If you want to cook for double the people, you double all the amounts: 4 cups of flour, 1 cup of sugar, and 500 mL of milk. Measuring ingredients, setting the timer, and dividing food into equal portions all use math.
Math in Travel
When you travel, math helps you plan. You calculate the distance, the time it will take, and the cost. If a train travels at 60 km per hour and your destination is 240 km away, the journey takes 240 ÷ 60 = 4 hours. If the train departs at 10:00 a.m., you arrive at 2:00 p.m. Math makes travelling smoother!
Math in Nature and Sports
Math is found in nature too! The petals of many flowers come in numbers like 3, 5, 8, or 13 (a Fibonacci pattern). Honeycombs are made of hexagons. In sports, scores, averages, time records, and distances are all about math. A cricket score of 180 runs in 30 overs means an average of 180 ÷ 30 = 6 runs per over. Math truly is everywhere!
