Key Concepts

Sources of Food

All our food comes from two main sources: plants and animals. Plants give us fruits, vegetables, cereals, pulses, spices, oils, sugar, tea, and coffee. Animals give us milk, eggs, meat, fish, and honey. Some food items need cooking before eating, while others like fruits can be eaten raw.

Parts of Plants We Eat

We eat different parts of different plants. Roots: carrot, radish, turnip, beetroot. Stems: potato, ginger, sugarcane. Leaves: spinach, cabbage, lettuce, mint. Flowers: cauliflower, broccoli. Fruits: mango, apple, tomato. Seeds: wheat, rice, maize, peas, mustard.

Food from Animals

Milk: We get milk from cows, buffaloes, goats, and camels. Milk is used to make butter, cheese, curd, ghee, and paneer. Eggs: We get eggs from hens, ducks, and other birds. Meat: Chicken, mutton, and fish are common sources of animal food. Honey: Bees collect nectar from flowers and make honey.

Types of Animals Based on Food

Herbivores: Animals that eat only plants (cow, deer, rabbit, goat, elephant).

Carnivores: Animals that eat only other animals (lion, tiger, snake, eagle).

Omnivores: Animals that eat both plants and animals (bear, crow, dog, human beings).

Ingredients and Cooking

Every food item is made up of one or more ingredients. For example, to make dal, you need pulses, water, salt, oil, and spices. Cooking makes food tastier, easier to digest, and kills germs. Different methods of cooking include boiling, frying, roasting, baking, and steaming.

Summary

Food is essential for all living beings. It comes from plants and animals. We eat different parts of plants — roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds. Animals provide milk, eggs, meat, and honey. Based on their food habits, animals are classified as herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores. Food items are prepared using various ingredients and cooking methods.
