She earned a Master's degree and a PhD in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado.

Journey to Space

Kalpana joined NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and trained to become an astronaut. Her first space mission was on the Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-87) in 1997. She spent 15 days, 16 hours, and 34 minutes in space, orbiting the Earth 252 times. She was the first Indian-born woman in space.

Second Mission and Tragedy

Kalpana Chawla's second space mission was on the Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-107) in January 2003. The mission lasted 16 days during which the crew conducted many scientific experiments. Tragically, on 1 February 2003, the Columbia shuttle broke apart during re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, killing all seven crew members, including Kalpana Chawla.
