NCERT Mathematics Class 1 - Chapter 3: Addition - Notes

CBSEClass 1Mathematicsเคœเฅ‹เคกเคผ

Learning Objectives

  • Understand what addition means
  • Add two small numbers together
  • Use the plus (+) and equals (=) signs
  • Solve simple addition problems with pictures
  • Add numbers whose sum is up to 9

Key Concepts

What is Addition?

Addition means putting two groups together to find out how many there are in all. When we add, the total is always bigger than both the numbers we started with. We use the plus sign (+) to show addition and the equals sign (=) to show the answer.

Adding with Objects

To add, we can use real things like fingers, stones, or toys. If you have 3 apples and get 2 more apples, you put them together and count all of them. 3 + 2 = 5. You now have 5 apples in total.

Addition Facts

Some addition facts are easy to remember. Adding 1 to any number gives the next number. For example, 4 + 1 = 5. Adding 0 to any number gives the same number. For example, 6 + 0 = 6. These facts help us add quickly.

Adding on a Number Line

A number line is a straight line with numbers on it. To add, start at the first number and jump forward by the second number. If you start at 3 and jump 4 steps forward, you land on 7. So 3 + 4 = 7.

Important Terms

  • Addition: Putting two groups together to find the total
  • Plus (+): The sign we use to show that we are adding
  • Equals (=): The sign that shows the answer or result
  • Sum: The answer we get when we add two numbers
  • Total: The whole amount after adding

Quick Revision

  • Addition means combining or putting together
  • The plus sign (+) tells us to add
  • The equals sign (=) shows the answer
  • Adding 0 to a number gives the same number
  • Adding 1 to a number gives the next number
  • We can use fingers, objects, or a number line to add
  • Practice: 2 + 3 = 5, 4 + 4 = 8, 1 + 6 = 7
