Key Concepts

Basic Shapes

We see shapes everywhere. A ball is round like a circle. A book looks like a rectangle. A slice of bread can look like a square. A samosa looks like a triangle. Learning shapes helps us understand the world around us.

Flat and Solid Shapes

Flat shapes are the ones we can draw on paper, like circles and squares. Solid shapes are the ones we can hold, like a ball, a box, or a cone. A ball is a solid round shape. A box is a solid shape with flat sides.

Position Words

We use special words to tell where things are. Inside means something is within a boundary. Outside means it is not within the boundary. Above means something is higher. Below means it is lower. Near means close by. Far means at a distance.

Important Terms

  • Circle: A round shape with no corners, like a coin or a bangle
  • Square: A shape with four equal sides and four corners, like a chessboard tile
  • Triangle: A shape with three sides and three corners, like a slice of pizza
  • Rectangle: A shape with four sides where opposite sides are equal, like a door
  • Inside: Within a boundary or space
  • Outside: Not within a boundary or space
