NCERT Mathematics Class 1 - Chapter 2: Numbers from One to Nine - Notes

एक से नौ तक की संख्याएँ

Learning Objectives

  • Count objects from 1 to 9
  • Write the numbers 1 to 9
  • Match the number to the correct group of objects
  • Understand the order of numbers from 1 to 9
  • Compare groups to find which has more or less

Key Concepts

Counting Objects

Counting means telling how many things are there. We point to each object one by one and say the numbers in order: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. The last number we say tells us how many objects are in the group.

Writing Numbers

Each number has its own symbol. We write 1 for one, 2 for two, 3 for three, 4 for four, 5 for five, 6 for six, 7 for seven, 8 for eight, and 9 for nine. Practice writing each number many times to get neat handwriting.

Comparing Groups

We can compare two groups of objects. If one group has more objects, we say that group has more. If a group has fewer objects, we say it has less. If both groups have the same number, we say they are equal. We can match objects one-to-one to compare.

Order of Numbers

Numbers have a fixed order. 1 comes first, then 2, then 3, and so on up to 9. The number that comes just before is called the predecessor. The number that comes just after is called the successor. For example, 5 comes before 6 and after 4.

Important Terms

  • Counting: Telling how many objects are in a group
  • Number: A symbol that tells us how many, like 1, 2, 3
  • More: A bigger quantity or group
  • Less: A smaller quantity or group
  • Equal: The same number of objects in two groups
  • Order: The fixed sequence in which numbers come

Quick Revision

  • Numbers from 1 to 9 are the basic counting numbers
  • Always count carefully by touching or pointing at each object
  • 1 is the smallest and 9 is the largest single-digit number
  • We can compare groups by matching objects one-to-one
  • Numbers follow a fixed order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
  • Practice writing numbers neatly every day
