Learning Objectives

  • Learn about different types of seeds
  • Understand how seeds grow into plants
  • Know how seeds are dispersed (spread) in nature
  • Observe the germination process of a seed

Key Concepts

What is a Seed?

A seed is a tiny package that contains a baby plant and food for it to grow. Seeds come in many shapes and sizes. Some are very tiny like mustard seeds, and some are big like coconut seeds. Every seed has a seed coat (outer cover) that protects it, stored food that feeds the baby plant, and an embryo (the tiny baby plant inside).

How Seeds Grow (Germination)

When a seed gets water, air, and warmth, it starts to grow. This process is called germination. First, the seed soaks up water and swells. Then the seed coat breaks open. A tiny root pushes out and grows downward into the soil. Then a tiny shoot pushes upward towards the sunlight. The shoot grows leaves, and the plant begins to make its own food.

Seed Dispersal

Seeds need to spread away from the parent plant so they have space, sunlight, and water to grow. Nature has clever ways to spread seeds. Wind dispersal: light seeds with wings or parachutes (like dandelion) are carried by the wind. Water dispersal: coconut seeds float on water and travel to new places. Animal dispersal: fruits eaten by birds and animals have their seeds spread through droppings. Bursting: some pods burst open and scatter seeds (like peas).

Seeds We Eat

We eat many types of seeds! Rice, wheat, and corn are seeds of grain plants. Almonds, cashews, and peanuts are edible seeds. Mustard seeds and cumin seeds are used as spices. Pulses like rajma (kidney beans), chana (chickpeas), and masoor (lentils) are also seeds. Seeds are nutritious and give us energy, protein, and healthy fats.

Important Terms

  • Seed: A small structure containing a baby plant and stored food
  • Germination: The process of a seed growing into a new plant
  • Seed Coat: The outer protective covering of a seed
  • Embryo: The tiny baby plant inside a seed
  • Seed Dispersal: The spreading of seeds away from the parent plant
  • Cotyledon: The seed leaf that provides food to the growing baby plant

Quick Revision

  • Seeds contain a baby plant (embryo), stored food, and a seed coat
  • Germination needs water, air, and warmth
  • Germination stages: seed swells → root grows → shoot grows → leaves appear
  • Seeds spread by wind, water, animals, and bursting
  • We eat many seeds: rice, wheat, almonds, pulses, spices
  • You can observe germination by soaking seeds in a wet cloth
