Key Concepts

Why Water is Precious

Water is essential for all life on Earth. Our body is about 70% water. We need water for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing, farming, and making electricity. Although the Earth looks blue from space because of oceans, most of that water is salty and cannot be used for drinking. Only a very small amount of the Earth's water is fresh water that we can use. That is why every drop counts!

The Water Cycle

Water moves in a never-ending cycle. The sun heats water in rivers, lakes, and oceans, turning it into water vapour (evaporation). The vapour rises and cools to form clouds (condensation). When clouds become heavy, the water falls as rain (precipitation). Rainwater flows into rivers, lakes, and underground, and the cycle starts again. The water cycle cleans and recycles the Earth's water.

Water Scarcity

Many places in India and around the world do not have enough water. In parts of Rajasthan, women walk many kilometres to fetch water. During summer, many cities face water shortages. Water scarcity happens when there is not enough rain, when too many trees are cut (deforestation), when water is wasted, or when water bodies are polluted. Climate change is making water scarcity worse in many areas.

Ways to Save Water

Every person can help save water. Turn off the tap while brushing teeth or soaping hands. Take shorter showers. Fix leaking taps immediately. Use a bucket to wash cars instead of a hose. Water plants in the evening to reduce evaporation. Collect rainwater in tanks (rainwater harvesting). Do not throw garbage into rivers and lakes. Reuse water when possible, like using washing machine water for mopping floors.

Important Terms

  • Water Cycle: The continuous movement of water from earth to sky and back
  • Evaporation: Water turning from liquid into vapour due to heat
  • Condensation: Water vapour cooling and turning back into tiny water drops (forming clouds)
  • Precipitation: Water falling from clouds as rain, snow, or hail
  • Water Scarcity: Not having enough clean water for everyone's needs
  • Rainwater Harvesting: Collecting and storing rainwater for later use

Quick Revision

  • Only a small fraction of Earth's water is fresh and usable
  • Water cycle: evaporation → condensation → precipitation
  • Many areas face water scarcity, especially in summer
  • Save water: close taps, fix leaks, take shorter baths
  • Rainwater harvesting helps store water for dry seasons
  • Do not pollute water bodies; keep them clean
