Key Concepts
Communication Without Words
We do not always need words to say something. A smile tells others that we are happy. A wave of the hand means "hello" or "goodbye". Nodding your head up and down means "yes", and shaking it side to side means "no". We use our face, hands, and body to express our feelings every day without even thinking about it!
Body Language
Body language means using your body to show how you feel. If you cross your arms, it might mean you are upset. If you jump up and down, it shows you are excited. If you hang your head down, it might mean you are sad. By watching people's body language, we can understand their feelings even without them saying a word.
Sign Language
Some people who cannot hear or speak use sign language. In sign language, you use your hands to make signs that stand for words and letters. It is a complete language, just like Hindi or English. Many deaf people communicate beautifully using sign language. We can all learn some basic signs to talk to them!
How Animals Communicate
Animals also communicate without words. Dogs wag their tails when they are happy and bark when they sense danger. Bees dance to tell other bees where flowers are. Birds sing to call their mates. Ants leave a scent trail for other ants to follow. Every animal has its own special way of sending messages!
