Key Concepts

Birds Around Us

There are thousands of different birds in the world. Some common birds you see every day are sparrows, crows, pigeons, mynas, and parrots. Sparrows are small and brown. Crows are black and very clever. Parrots are green and can imitate sounds. Peacocks are India's national bird and have beautiful colourful feathers.

How Birds Fly

Birds have special body parts that help them fly. Their wings are strong and covered with feathers. They flap their wings up and down to push themselves through the air. Birds have light, hollow bones that make them weigh less. Their body shape is smooth and streamlined so air flows easily around them. Not all birds can fly though; ostriches and penguins cannot fly!

Bird Nests

Birds build nests to lay their eggs and raise their babies. Different birds make different types of nests. The weaver bird makes a beautiful hanging nest from grass. Crows make nests from twigs and sticks on trees. The woodpecker makes a hole in a tree trunk. Some birds like the cuckoo do not build nests at all; they lay their eggs in other birds' nests!

What Birds Eat

Different birds eat different things. Sparrows and pigeons eat grains and seeds. Woodpeckers eat insects from inside tree bark. Eagles and hawks eat small animals and fish. Hummingbirds drink nectar from flowers. A bird's beak is shaped to eat its type of food: pointed beaks for catching insects, strong beaks for cracking seeds.
