NCERT Mathematics Class 1 - Chapter 7: Measurement - Notes

मापन

Learning Objectives

  • Compare objects by their length: long and short
  • Compare objects by their height: tall and short
  • Compare objects by their weight: heavy and light
  • Measure length using non-standard units like hands and feet
  • Understand thick and thin, wide and narrow

Key Concepts

Long and Short

Objects have different lengths. A pencil is shorter than a ruler. A rope can be very long. We compare two objects by placing them side by side. The one that stretches further is longer. The other one is shorter.

Tall and Short

People and things have different heights. A tree is tall. A flower is short. Your father may be taller than you. We compare heights by standing things next to each other on the same flat ground.

Heavy and Light

Objects have different weights. A stone is heavy. A feather is light. We can compare two things by holding one in each hand. The one that pulls your hand down more is heavier. A watermelon is heavier than an apple.

Measuring with Body Parts

We can measure things using our hands, feet, or steps. We can measure a table using hand spans. We can measure a room by counting our steps. These are called non-standard units because different people have different hand and foot sizes.

Important Terms

  • Length: How long something is from one end to the other
  • Height: How tall something is from bottom to top
  • Weight: How heavy or light something is
  • Long: Having a greater length
  • Short: Having a smaller length or height
  • Heavy: Having more weight
  • Light: Having less weight
  • Hand span: The distance from thumb tip to little finger tip when the hand is spread

Quick Revision

  • We compare objects as long or short, tall or short, heavy or light
  • Place objects side by side to compare length
  • Stand objects on the same ground to compare height
  • Hold objects in your hands to compare weight
  • We can measure using hand spans, footsteps, and other body parts
  • Different people may get different measurements because body sizes differ
