About the Story

Author: Roald Dahl (from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" series)

Theme: Imagination, invention, and the fantastical world of Mr Willy Wonka.

Story Summary

This extract is from Roald Dahl's book. Mr Willy Wonka had previously invented Wonka-Vite, a medicine that made people younger. But some people took too much and became too young - even becoming negative ages (minus years) and disappearing.

To bring them back, Mr Wonka invented Vita-Wonk, a potion that makes people older. He collected ingredients from the oldest living things: a 4000-year-old bristlecone pine tree, a 168-year-old tortoise, a 200-year-old whale, and other ancient creatures. He boiled the mixture and produced a single drop of oily black liquid.

He tested it on a 20-year-old Oompa-Loompa volunteer, who instantly aged to 75 years old. The invention worked, and Wonka could use it to rescue the people who had become too young.
