Types of Houses
People live in different types of houses. In cities, many people live in flats or apartments in tall buildings. In villages, houses are often made of mud, bricks, or stone with open spaces around them. In hilly areas, houses have sloping roofs so that rain and snow slide off easily. In very cold places, some people build houses with ice called igloos. In places that flood, houses are built on stilts (tall poles) above the water.

Why Houses are Different
The type of house people build depends on the weather and the land. In hot places, houses have thick walls and small windows to keep the inside cool. In rainy areas, roofs are sloped so water flows off. In cold places, houses have thick walls to keep warmth inside. Houses near rivers are raised on stilts to stay safe from floods.
Parts of a House
Most houses have rooms for different purposes: a kitchen for cooking, a bedroom for sleeping, a bathroom for bathing, and a living room for sitting together. Some houses also have a garden or a courtyard. Every house needs a door to enter and windows for fresh air and sunlight.
