  • Describe what you see from different positions

Key Concepts

Looking from Different Sides

When you look at an object from different positions, it can look very different. For example, a cup looks round from the top but looks like a rectangle with a handle from the side. A ball looks round from every side!

Top View, Front View, and Side View

The top view is what you see when you look at something from above, like a bird flying over it. The front view is what you see when you stand in front of it. The side view is what you see when you stand to the left or right of it. Each view shows a different shape.

Left and Right

Your left hand is the hand you do not write with (for most people). Your right hand is the hand you write with (for most people). When you face someone, their left is on your right side, and their right is on your left side. This can be tricky!

Important Terms

  • Top View: The way something looks when you see it from above
  • Front View: The way something looks when you see it from the front
  • Side View: The way something looks when you see it from the side
  • Position: The place where you are standing or sitting when you look at something
