Buildings Tell Stories
Old buildings and monuments tell us stories about the people who built them. By looking at a fort, we can learn how kings protected their kingdoms. By looking at a temple or mosque, we learn about the religion and art of that time. By looking at a step well, we understand how people stored water. Buildings are like history books made of stone!
Famous Monuments of India
India has many famous old buildings. The Red Fort in Delhi was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The Golconda Fort in Hyderabad is known for its sound system where a clap at the gate can be heard at the top. The temples of Khajuraho have beautiful carvings. The Sun Temple of Konark in Odisha is shaped like a chariot. Each monument shows the skill and imagination of its builders.
Materials Used in Old Buildings
Builders of the past used different materials depending on what was available nearby. In Rajasthan, buildings were made of sandstone and marble. In Kerala, wood was used because of the many forests. In the Himalayan region, houses were made of wood and stone. In some places, lime mortar (a mixture of lime and other materials) was used to hold stones together, without any cement!
Preserving Our Heritage
Old monuments are our heritage, which means they belong to all of us and we must take care of them. Many monuments are hundreds or even thousands of years old and are getting damaged. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protects important monuments. We should not write or scratch on old buildings. We should not throw garbage near monuments. By protecting them, we save our history for future children to see and learn from.
