NCERT Mathematics Class 4 - Chapter 5: The Way The World Looks - Notes

दुनिया कैसी दिखती है

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how objects look from the top, front, and side
  • Draw simple maps and plans from the top view
  • Relate 3D objects to their 2D views
  • Develop spatial understanding and visualization skills

Key Concepts

Different Views of Objects

Every object looks different depending on where you are standing. A glass looks like a circle from the top, a rectangle from the front, and a rectangle from the side too. A book looks like a rectangle from the top and a thin line from the side. Learning to imagine different views of objects helps you understand shapes better.

Top View (Bird's Eye View)

The top view is what you see when you look straight down from above, like a bird flying over. From the top, a table looks like a rectangle. A round plate looks like a circle. Buildings look like squares or rectangles. Maps are drawn from the top view. That is why maps show the shape of land as seen from above.

Drawing a Simple Map

A map shows things from the top view. To draw a map of your classroom, imagine you are looking down from the ceiling. Draw the walls as lines. Show the desks as small rectangles. Show the teacher's table as a bigger rectangle. Mark the door and windows. A map helps people find their way around a place.

Front View and Side View

The front view is what you see when you stand in front of something. The side view is what you see from the left or right side. A car looks long from the side but short from the front. An elephant looks big from the front and even bigger from the side. Architects use all three views to design buildings.

Important Terms

  • Top View: How something looks from directly above
  • Front View: How something looks from the front
  • Side View: How something looks from the left or right side
  • Map: A drawing that shows a place from the top view
  • 3D Object: A solid object that has length, width, and height
  • 2D Shape: A flat shape that has only length and width

Quick Revision

  • Objects look different from the top, front, and side
  • Top view is like looking from above (bird's eye view)
  • Maps are drawn from the top view
  • A circle from the top can be a ball or a cylinder
  • Front view and side view show different details of the same object
  • Practice drawing different views of everyday objects
