NCERT Mathematics Class 3 - Chapter 5: Shapes and Designs - Notes

आकृतियाँ और डिज़ाइन

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and name basic shapes like circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares
  • Understand the properties of different shapes
  • Create patterns and designs using shapes
  • Recognize shapes in everyday objects around us

Key Concepts

Basic Shapes

Shapes are all around us! A circle is perfectly round with no corners, like a coin or a wheel. A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners, like a slice of pizza. A rectangle has 4 sides with opposite sides equal and 4 square corners, like a door. A square has 4 equal sides and 4 square corners, like a chessboard tile.

Sides and Corners

A side is a straight line that forms part of a shape. A corner is where two sides meet. A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners. A rectangle and a square both have 4 sides and 4 corners. A circle has no sides and no corners because it is curved all around.

Shapes in Our World

Look around you and you will find shapes everywhere! Windows and doors are usually rectangles. Wheels and coins are circles. Road signs are often triangles. Floor tiles can be squares. Can you find more shapes around your classroom?

Making Patterns with Shapes

You can create beautiful patterns by repeating shapes in a fixed order. For example: circle, square, circle, square. Or you can combine different shapes to make a design, like using triangles and squares to draw a house with a pointed roof.

Important Terms

  • Circle: A round shape with no corners and no straight sides
  • Triangle: A shape with 3 straight sides and 3 corners
  • Rectangle: A shape with 4 sides where opposite sides are equal, and 4 square corners
  • Square: A shape with 4 equal sides and 4 square corners
  • Side: A straight line that forms part of a shape
  • Corner: The point where two sides of a shape meet

Quick Revision

  • Circle: 0 sides, 0 corners
  • Triangle: 3 sides, 3 corners
  • Rectangle: 4 sides (opposite sides equal), 4 corners
  • Square: 4 equal sides, 4 corners (a special rectangle)
  • Shapes can be combined to make patterns and designs
  • We see shapes in everyday objects like doors, wheels, and tiles
