NCERT Mathematics Class 5 - Chapter 2: Shapes and Angles - Notes

आकृतियाँ और कोण

Learning Objectives

  • Identify different types of angles: right angle, acute angle, obtuse angle
  • Understand what makes an angle
  • Recognize angles in everyday objects
  • Compare and classify angles

Key Concepts

What is an Angle?

An angle is formed when two straight lines meet at a point. The point where they meet is called the vertex. The two lines are called the arms of the angle. When you open a book, the two covers form an angle. When you open a door, the door and the wall form an angle. Angles are everywhere around us!

Right Angle

A right angle looks like the corner of a book or a door that is wide open against the wall. It measures exactly 90 degrees. The corners of a rectangle, a square, and a page of your notebook are all right angles. You can use the corner of a notebook to check if an angle is a right angle.

Acute Angle

An acute angle is smaller than a right angle (less than 90 degrees). It looks like a slightly open book or a pizza slice. The hands of a clock at 1 o'clock form an acute angle. When you partly open a pair of scissors, they make an acute angle. Think of "acute" as "a cute little angle" because it is small!

Obtuse Angle

An obtuse angle is bigger than a right angle but smaller than a straight line (between 90 and 180 degrees). It looks like a book opened more than halfway. The hands of a clock at 10 o'clock form an obtuse angle. When you open a fan wide, the blades make obtuse angles with each other.

Straight Angle

A straight angle measures exactly 180 degrees and looks like a straight line. When you open a book completely flat, the two covers form a straight angle. Two right angles together make one straight angle: 90 + 90 = 180 degrees.

Important Terms

  • Angle: The space between two lines that meet at a point
  • Vertex: The point where two lines meet to form an angle
  • Right Angle: An angle of exactly 90 degrees, like a corner of a book
  • Acute Angle: An angle less than 90 degrees (smaller than a right angle)
  • Obtuse Angle: An angle between 90 and 180 degrees (bigger than a right angle)
  • Straight Angle: An angle of exactly 180 degrees (a straight line)

Quick Revision

  • An angle is formed where two lines meet
  • Right angle = 90 degrees (corner of a page)
  • Acute angle < 90 degrees (small, "cute" angle)
  • Obtuse angle > 90 degrees but < 180 degrees
  • Straight angle = 180 degrees (flat line)
  • Use a notebook corner to check for right angles
