Key Concepts

Indian Money

In India, we use Rupees (Rs or ₹) and Paise (p) as money. 1 Rupee = 100 Paise. We have coins of 1 rupee, 2 rupees, 5 rupees, and 10 rupees. We have notes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 rupees. You can make the same amount using different combinations of coins and notes.

Converting Rupees and Paise

To write money, we use a dot to separate rupees and paise: Rs 5.50 means 5 rupees and 50 paise. Rs 12.75 means 12 rupees and 75 paise. To convert rupees to paise, multiply by 100: Rs 3 = 300 paise. To convert paise to rupees, divide by 100: 450 paise = Rs 4.50.

Adding Money

When adding money, line up the rupees and paise properly. Add the paise first, then the rupees. If paise add up to 100 or more, convert to rupees. For example: Rs 15.50 + Rs 8.75 = Rs 24.25 (50 + 75 = 125 paise = 1 rupee 25 paise, carry 1 rupee).

Making Change

When you buy something and pay more, you get change back. Change = Money paid - Cost of item. For example, if a notebook costs Rs 35 and you pay Rs 50, your change is 50 - 35 = Rs 15. Always count your change to make sure it is correct!
