Key Concepts
Atomic Structure & Periodic Table
Quantum numbers: n (principal), l (azimuthal), m (magnetic), s (spin). Aufbau principle: Electrons fill lowest energy orbitals first. Hund's rule: Orbitals are singly occupied before pairing.
Periodic trends: Atomic radius decreases across period, increases down group. Ionization energy increases across period.
Chemical Bonding
- Ionic bond: Transfer of electrons (NaCl, MgO)
- Covalent bond: Sharing of electrons (H₂, O₂, CH₄)
- VSEPR theory: Predicts molecular geometry based on electron pairs
- Hybridization: sp³ (tetrahedral), sp² (trigonal planar), sp (linear)
Organic Chemistry
IUPAC naming: Root word (chain length) + suffix (functional group). Isomerism: Structural (chain, position, functional) and Stereoisomerism (geometric, optical).
- Alkanes: CₙH₂ₙ₊₂ (saturated, single bonds)
- Alkenes: CₙH₂ₙ (one double bond)
- Alkynes: CₙH₂ₙ₋₂ (one triple bond)
Thermodynamics & Equilibrium
First law: ΔU = q + w. Enthalpy: ΔH = ΔU + PΔV. Le Chatelier's principle: System shifts to counteract change in conditions.
Important Points to Remember
- Balance equations before solving stoichiometry problems
- Organic reactions: learn mechanism, not just products
- For CBSE boards, practice named reactions (Wurtz, Friedel-Crafts, etc.)
Quick Revision Tips
- Make flashcards for periodic table trends and organic reactions
- Practice mole concept calculations daily
- Revise CBSE Class 11 NCERT chapter summaries before exam
