  • Know about traffic rules and road safety
  • Appreciate how transport helps us in daily life

Key Concepts

Why Do We Need Transport?

Transport means the ways we travel from one place to another. We use transport to go to school, markets, and other cities. Goods like food and clothes are also moved from one place to another using transport. Without transport, it would take very long to go anywhere and we would not get things from far away places.

Transport on Land

Land transport includes vehicles that move on roads and rails. Cars, buses, trucks, and motorcycles move on roads. Trains move on railway tracks and can carry many people. Bicycles and rickshaws do not need fuel. In some places, people still use bullock carts, horse carts, and camels for transport.

Transport on Water

Water transport includes boats, ships, and ferries that move on rivers and seas. Small boats are used to cross rivers. Big ships carry people and goods across the ocean to other countries. Steamers and ferries are used to carry many passengers at once. Fishermen use boats to go out to sea to catch fish.

Transport in Air

Air transport is the fastest way to travel. Aeroplanes fly high in the sky and can carry hundreds of people. Helicopters can take off and land in small spaces and are used for rescue work. Air transport is used to travel to far-away places quickly and to send mail and packages fast.

Road Safety

When we are on the road, we must follow traffic rules. Always walk on the footpath. Cross the road at a zebra crossing. Look left, then right, then left again before crossing. Follow traffic signals: red means stop, yellow means get ready, and green means go. Wear a helmet on a motorcycle and a seatbelt in a car.
