Learning Objectives

  • Understand the concept of symmetry
  • Identify lines of symmetry in shapes and objects
  • Find shapes that have no symmetry
  • Create symmetrical patterns and designs

Key Concepts

What is Symmetry?

A shape has symmetry when you can fold it along a line and both halves match exactly. This special line is called the line of symmetry. It is like looking in a mirror: one half is the mirror image of the other half. Many things in nature have symmetry, like butterflies, leaves, and flowers.

Line of Symmetry

The line of symmetry divides a shape into two equal halves that are mirror images of each other. A rectangle has 2 lines of symmetry. A square has 4 lines of symmetry. A circle has infinite lines of symmetry (you can fold it along any diameter). The letter A has 1 line of symmetry, but the letter F has no line of symmetry.

Shapes and Symmetry

An equilateral triangle (all sides equal) has 3 lines of symmetry. A regular pentagon has 5 lines of symmetry. A regular hexagon has 6 lines of symmetry. In general, a regular shape with n sides has n lines of symmetry. Irregular shapes may have 1 line, or even no line of symmetry.

Symmetry in Nature and Art

Symmetry is found everywhere in nature. A butterfly's wings are symmetrical. Your face is nearly symmetrical. Flowers often have symmetrical petals. Artists and architects use symmetry to create beautiful designs. Rangoli patterns are often symmetrical. Symmetry makes things look balanced and pleasing to the eye.

Important Terms

  • Symmetry: When one half of something is the mirror image of the other half
  • Line of Symmetry: The line along which a shape can be folded so both halves match
  • Mirror Image: A reflection that looks like the original but flipped
  • Symmetrical: Having symmetry (balanced and equal on both sides)
  • Asymmetrical: Having no symmetry (not balanced)

Quick Revision

  • Symmetry means both halves of a shape match when folded
  • The fold line is called the line of symmetry
  • Square: 4 lines, Rectangle: 2 lines, Circle: infinite lines
  • Equilateral triangle: 3 lines of symmetry
  • Many things in nature are symmetrical: butterflies, leaves, flowers
  • Some shapes and letters have no line of symmetry
